THE HEXAGRAM of CREATION (Genesis chapter 1)(sound vibrations[יהוה's voice])


    With this understanding of the basic geometric processes involved with the creation at the start Genesis; the basic geometric progression from point, through line, to circle, & to the marking of radial arc points is described in relation to the 1st processes of creation: "a single, concealed, supernal point shone; so it is called רשית (reyshiyth), Beginning. This beginning expanded, building itself a palace. With this beginning, the unknown concealed one (יהוה YAHWEH) created the palace. from here on בראשית בראשית (B'reyshiyth-barayshiyth), He created 6....6 directions extending from the supernal mystery through the expansion that He created from the primordial point.


   The 1st verse of Genesis provides a summary of creation that is being modeled by this hexagram. The remainder of the 1st chapter can be understood as a progressive revelation of this hexagram form. Such a progressive revelation of the work of the 1st day will show in the following days of creation. On the very same day that the Heavens and the Earth were created, all their products were made as well and afterward יהוה (YAHWEH) revealed them day by day, and explains each one of them on the day that it was revealed. But it is not only the sacred geometry of the hexagram that Genesis 1 has encoded. The esoteric nature of the creation account can be demonstrated by its apparent employment of 2 organizing keys drawn from the most essential of esoteric sciences, geometry & music.

   I shall begin my exploration with the latter & then conclude with analyzing the geometry of the full creation account. The key to this peculiar chronological order of creation is so remarkably simple, that it is a wonder no one has ever recognized it before. It is none other than the overtone or harmonic series. When a tone is sounded (1), it's the 1st overtone or second harmonic tone will be the Octave (2), followed by the 5th (3), the next Octave (4) the 3rd (5), the next 5th (6), and minor 7th (7). This can represented by the following chromatic Solfeggio names and tones in the key of C: (1) Do-C1; (2) Do-C2; (3) Sol-G1; (4) Do-C3; (5) Mi-E1; (6) Sol-G2; Tay-Bb1. An important aspect of the harmonic series is the distinction it makes between the odd and even harmonics, a distinction that the Pythagorean tradition related to its central notions of the limited and limitless.

   For whereas each odd number introduces a new tone, it is the function of the even numbers to resonate this tone in the doubling geometric progression through a potentially infinite number of Octaves. Thus, the odd numbers are each identified with their own unique tone while the even numbers relate this limited particularity to the limitless through a progression that they neither initiate nor can end. Now what is astonishing about this series in conjunction with the creation account is that the 1st, 2nd, & 4th positions in which the Do tone is sounded, are the same chronological positions in which reference is made a heavenly creation; the 3rd & 6th positions in which the Sol tone is sounded, are the same in reference is made to a earthly creation; and remaining tones of the 5th & 7th positions relate to neither of these creation categories.

   Let us now follow the follow the account through the day of creation. The 1st day can be associated with heaven (Do) insofar as it involves the creation of the supernal light. In the 2nd day, the firmament that is created is specifically called "Heaven" (Do). The 3rd day gives us the creation of the dry land called "Earth" (Sol). The 4th day returns us to the creation of the "lights in the firmament of Heaven" (Do). The 5th day takes us to the creation of the creatures inhabiting the flowing elements of water & air (Mi). The 6th day returns us to the earth (Sol) with the creation of the animals & man (Adam). And 7th day brings us to the Shabbat sanctification that may well be associated with modulating interval of the minor 7th, within a harmonic theory is more precisely defined as that flatter interval of the septimal 7th. Thus, the peculiar reversal of the 3rd & 4th days; in terms of which the logical progression of Heavenly creation is interrupted by that of earthly vegetation, can be explained & would seem to have been motivated by the overriding consideration of the parallel to the harmonic series of overtones. The importance of such a parallel would further suggest that Hebrew cosmology is like the Hindu in tracing the creation back to an original sound. For Hindu cosmology it is the sound Om or Aum; in the biblical account it is the sound produced by the voice of God יהוה (YAHWEH), an original vibration resulting in a form of supernal energy that can be associated with light.

   If all of the creation is implicit in the creation activity of the 1st day, as the opening 7 words(In the beginning יהוה [YAHWEH] created the Heaven) would suggest, then this original sound which may be what ישראל (YISRAEL) is twice daily called to "hear" in prayers, implicitly contains the harmonic series that is to be progressively expressed through the remaining days of creation & provides its order of manifestation. The immediate translation of sound waves into a patterning of light, ascribed to the 1st day of creation, reveals an esoteric understanding of the relationship of musical harmonics to geometric form that is being increasingly substantiated by modern experimentation. One must bear in mind that these phenomenas are generated by sound. If the sound is removed the whole picture along with its dynamics will disappear & return again immediately when the sound is restored. These phenomenas are subject to definite laws & repeatable at any time.

   The resultants of harmonic vibrations are at all times so strictly law-ordered that it is possible to draw up a systematicology of morphogenesis. What one must bear in mind is that under this or that quite specific set of conditions, nature produces this form only & no other. Nothing here is diffuse & in determinate; everything presents itself in a precisely defined form. The more one studies these things, the more one realizes that sound is the "Creative Principle". it must be regarded as primordial [NOTE: see Hans Jenny, 'Cymatics' (Basil: Basilius Presse, 1974, vol. 2; pages 96 & 100)]. The ability of the hexagram form to provide such a secondary key to the Genesis account further suggest that it was precisely the sound would could 'Cymatically' produce the hexagram that was understood to have been emitted by the divine voice of God יהוה (YAHWEH) "in the beginning".

   This final proof of the esoteric nature of the biblical account & of its particular association with the hexagram form has now to be demonstrated. We begin, then, with a circle that represents "the face of the deep" & that is filled with "waters" that are "without form & void" (Genesis 1:2). Into this circle, a ray of light may be thought to emerge from the uppermost radial arc point to fill & manifest the upper sub-triangle of the hexagram & to complete the creative process of the 1st day. On the 2nd day, firmaments that divides the upper & lower bars of the hexagram & to fill the space between them. It is the special circumstances of the 3rd day that spatially as well as temporally argue strongly for the esoteric keys being here provided; "And God יהוה (YAHWEH) said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear....."(Genesis 1:9). In terms of the hexagram model, the place of the lower waters would be beneath the lower bar of the hexagram, which is the base of its full ascending triangle, & the "one place" where they can gathered would be in the hexagrams lowest sub-triangle, the point of its full descending triangle. The lower 2 sub-triangle of the full ascending triangle would then provide the twin mountain forms in which the "dry land" could appear. Continuing with the account, the 4th day would now complete the manifestation of the hexagram form, the remaining 2 upper sub-triangles of the full descending triangle providing the spaces within the firmament in which the Sun & Moon can be set. The circumstances of the 5th day can be better understood if the descending triangle is thought to overlay the ascending triangle in a single unbroken form, for the fish & fowl created on this day can then be placed within the water of its lower sub-triangle & the air that can be understood to fill the adjoining inner hexagram. With the 6th day, the separated earthly mountains, which had earlier been covered with vegetation, can now be given the animal & human inhabitants that complete the work of creation. Though the Shabbat adds no new elements, its holiness is suggested in the final design of the Hexagram of Creation by the way the 4th day elements are illustrated.

   The simultaneous appearance of the setting Sun & 3 stars is meant to suggest that most holy 25th hour of the Shabbat occupying the period from just before sunset, when the Shabbat began on the previous evening to the time at which the 1st 3 stars can be seen, which officially closes the Shabbat. In the artistic design of the Hexagram of Creation, the uppermost sub-triangle of fire is designated by the Hebrew letter (SHIN ש)[sheen], & the lowermost sub-triangle of water by the Hebrew letter (MEM מ)[mame], & the central point of the air by the Hebrew letter (ALEPH א)[aw-lef]. As was earlier indicated, these letters were given these connotations in the Sefer Yetzirah, which classifies them as the "Mother Letters". To complete the design, the remaining 4 sub-triangles have each been correlated with one of the letters of the Tetragrammaton (יהוה).

   Trees also figures in each of the ascending sub-triangles, the Tree of Knowledge, on the left mountain of the fallen man (Genesis 2:7-9), the burning bush, on the right mountain of the perfected man (Exodus 3:2) & the Tree of Life Diagram (Genesis 2:7-9) on the central mountain of transcendent light, that diagram will provide the farther key which the Hexagram of Creation can generate the more complex & precise cosmological model whose construction & interpretation will constitute the major subject & contribution of this figure. We come finally to what may be the most significant fact about the hexagram modeling of the creation account, the fact that the full manifestation of the hexagram is complete by the 4th day of a 7 day process.
